2018 Season

Week 8: Harrison (Home)

Preview: Farmington Hills Harrison roles into week 8 with a 5-2 record. They are again one of the top teams in the county and state. They are led by legendary head coach John Herrington and running back Rod Heard (Northwestern). Harrison's two losses are against Oak Park and Rochester Adams.

Recap:

Varsity: On Friday night, Groves clinched their 6th straight playoff appearance by beating Harrison 25-6. This is the fourth straight year that the Falcons have beat Harrison. Demonte' McCurdy led the way with 56 yards rushing and 1 TD. Khalil Dawsey returned his 2nd Kickoff of the year for a TD. Dawsey also threw a TD pass to Christian Thomas to help seal the win. Joel Mitchell added a TD Run.

Junior Varsity: The JV beat Harrison 20-6 on Thursday afternoon at Harrison. The win moves their record to 6-0-1.

Freshman: The Freshman team beat North Farmington's JV team 42-0 to move their record to 4-4 on the season.

Week 9: Seaholm (Home)

Preview: Seaholm rolls into week 9 with a 7-1 record and champions of the OAA Blue Division. Seaholm is led by Coach Jim Dewald.

Week 10: Seaholm (Away) - Playoffs

Preview: Groves and Seaholm will meet in the first round of the playoffs at Seaholm on Friday Night. This will mark only the second time in the rivalry that Groves and Seaholm have played twice in a season. In 1997, Seaholm beat Groves in week 9 and then again in the regional final at Seaholm. Groves is currently on a five game winning streak against Seaholm.

Week 11: Brother Rice (Home) - Playoffs

Preview: Brother Rice comes into the second round of the playoffs with a 7-3 record on the season. They beat Livonia Churchill in the first round of the playoffs. Groves and Brother Rice have meet 12 times with Brother Rice holding a 9-3 record over Groves. These two teams have meet 5 out of the last 6 years in the playoffs. Last year's game went to Triple Overtime with Rice winning 24-21.

Recap: On Friday night, the Falcons captured their third district title by beating Brother Rice 38-24 in the second round of the playoffs. Khalil Dawsey scored three TD's. He had 2 receiving TDs and one interception return for a TD. Markis Alexander would tie a school record by throwing 4 TD passes.

Week 12: Livonia Franklin (Home) - Playoffs

Preview: Livonia Franklin comes into town with a 7-4 record and winning their third district title in four years. Franklin has had great success lately. The lost in the Division 2 finals in 2017 and played in the Division 2 Semi-finals in 2015. Franklin is led by Junior QB Jacob Kelbert. Groves and Franklin played in the Northwest Suburban League from 1963-1971. Groves and Franklin have meet 9 times. Groves has a 0-8-1 record in the series. The last game played was in 1971 and Franklin won 55-0.

Week 13: Warren De La Salle @ Hazel Park

Preview: De La Salle comes into week 13 with a 10-2 record and winners of the Catholic League. They are also defending State Champs. De La Salle is led by head Coach Mike Gianone and has several top players in Macomb County and the State. This will be the first meeting between Groves and De La Salle.

Week 7: Troy (Homecoming)

Preview: Troy comes into week 7 with a 1-5 record on the season. Troy has lost some close games this season including a 26-9 loss to Oak Park during week 6.

Recap:

Varsity: On Friday night, the Falcons captured their 5th straight victory as they beat Troy 38-0 in front of a large students section and former alumni. Demonte McCurdy was the difference maker in this game as he rushed for three touchdowns. Markis Alexander connected with Clayton Fox for a touchdown and Josh Salter added a rushing touchdown.

Junior Varsity: On Wednesday night at Troy, the JV continued their winning ways as they beat Troy to move their record to 6-0-1.

Freshman: On Thursday afternoon, the freshman lost at Lake Orion 34-20. Their record is now 3-4.

Week 11: Brother Rice - Playoff Game

OAA: All League

Week 6: Troy Athens (Away)

Preview: Troy Athens comes into week 6 win less on the season. This is their first year in the OAA White after competing in the OAA Red or the top Division in the OAA since the creation of the OAA in 1994. Groves and Athens have a rich history and they both competed in the old Metro Suburban League from 1977-1993. Groves and Athens have met 24 times and Athens holds a 18-6 record against Groves. The last meeting came in 2006 when Athens beat Groves 29-26 on a last second TD pass. Athens is led by new Head Coach Billy Keenist.

Varsity: On Friday night the Falcons beat Athens 47-6. The Falcons started off slow and took a 7-6 lead into half time. After a quality half time meeting, the Falcons came out and scored three plays into the second half and continued to move the ball on offense the rest of the night. Markis Alexander was 8-14 for 185 yards and 2 TDs including a 85 yard bomb to Khalil Dawsey. Christian Thomas caught 2 passes including one for a TD. Demonte McCurdy scored 2 TDs, Colby Taylor scored one and senior fullback Joel Mitchell plunged in from 1 yard out.

Junior Varsity: On Wednesday night at Groves, the JV beat Troy Athens 29-6 to improve their record to 5-0-1 on the season.

Freshman: On Thursday afternoon at Oxford, the freshman lost to Oxford 44-28. Their record is 3-3 on the season.

Week 10: Seaholm - Playoff Game

Oakland Press: Seaholm Playoff Game

Week 5: Bloomfield Hills (Home)

Preview: Bloomfield Hills comes into week 5 with a 1-4 record. This game is the OAA crossover game for Groves this year. Since Andover and Lahser combined in 2013, Groves and Bloomfield Hills have only met one time. Groves beat Bloomfield Hills 49-17 in their first football game as a combined school. Bloomfield Hills is led by Longtime Lahser coach Dan Loria.

Varsity: On Friday night at Groves, the Falcons erased and early 7-0 score by rallying off the next 47 points to come away with the 47-7 victory over Bloomfield Hills. Junior Runningback Ralph Donaldson led the way with 3 rushing touchdowns. Colby Taylor rushed for 2 TDs and Markel Harris added one rushing TD. Senior Demonte McCurdy broke a school record from 1983 by returning a punt 80 yards for a TD. The win moves the Falcons record to 3-2 on the season.

Junior Varsity: On Thursday night at Bloomfield Hills, the Junior Varsity continued to roll as they beat Bloomfield 49-7. The win moves their record to 4-0-1 on the season.

Freshman: On Thursday afternoon at Bloomfield Hills, the Freshman won their third game in a row as they beat Bloomfield 41-7. The freshman are now 3-2 on the season.

Week 4: Rochester (Away)

Preview: Rochester comes into week 3 with a 1-2 record. They lost a close one to city Rival Rochester Adams in week 1 and beat Troy Athens in week 2. Rochester and Groves are old Suburban League opponents. As they played every year from 1983 to 1993. Groves and Rochester have met several times since the creation of the OAA with the last time being in 2017. Groves came away with a 31-13 victory. Rochester holds a 11-7 record against Groves. Rochester is led by 24 seniors.

Recap:

Varsity: On Friday night, the Falcons played a tough senior dominated Rochester team that battle throughout the contest. Groves was able to outlast Rochester by a score of 35-28. Kaleb Coleman broke up a Rochester pass on 4th down that secured the victory in the last few seconds for Groves. Senior Demonte McCurdy led the way with 4 touchdowns. He rushed for 90 yards and 3 touchdowns and added a 4th touchdown on defense. Junior Defensive Back Jack Curran added an interception that set up a late first half score for Groves. The win pulls Groves record to 2-2 on the season.

Junior Varsity: On Thursday night at Groves, the JV team beat Rochester 41-0. They improve their record to 3-0-1.

Freshman: On Thursday afternoon at Groves, the Freshman team beat Rochester 49-26. They improve their record to 2-2.

Week 3: Stoney Creek (Away)

Preview: The Falcons head on the road for the first time this season when they head out to Stoney Creek. The Falcons beat the cougars 14-3 last year and are 1-2 overall. Stoney Creek is led by first year head coach Nick Merlo and senior 4 year starting QB Frank Potenza.

Varsity: On Friday night the Falcons won their first game of the year by beating Stoney Creek 28-6. Khalil Dawsey scored on a 73 yard TD run, Demonte McCurdy added a TD run. Christian Thomas and Colby Taylor each caught TD passes from Markis Alexander. On the defensive side of the ball, Henry Van Faussien had 16 tackles and Joel Mitchell had 15 tackles.

JV: On Thursday night at home the JV football team added another win by beating Stoney Creek 30-26. They improve their record to 2-0-1

Freshman: On Thursday afternoon at Groves, the freshman team also beat Stoney Creek 21-6 to get their first win of the year. They improve their record to 1-2.

Week 2: Oak Park (Home)

Preview: Oak Park comes into week 2 with a 1-0 record. They opened up the season by beating Utica Eisenhower 31-13. Oak Park has several Division I players including QB Dwan Mathis, CB Enzo Jennings, and offensive lineman Justin Rogers. Groves shared the 2017 OAA white title with Oak Park last season as the Knights beat Groves 34-14. Groves has a 7-5 all time record vs Oak Park.

Varsity: On Thursday Night, the Falcons lost to Oak Park 13-7. Oak Park opened the scoring with a TD on their second play of the game. After that the Falcons defense was able to hold the Knights until the end of the game when Oak Park scored with 2 minutes to go to take the lead and secure the win. Markis Alexander found Khalil Dawsey on a rocket screen for the lone TD for Groves.

Junior Varsity: The JV beat Oak Park on Wednesday Night 14-12 to improve their record to 1-0-1

Freshman: The Freshman team lost to Berkley's JV team 26-24. The freshman are 0-2.

Week 1: West Bloomfield (Home)

Preview: For the second time in three years, the Falcons open with West Bloomfield. The Lakers are coming off their best team in school history by losing in the State Championship game to Clarkston. West Bloomfield is replacing 9 starters on offense and several starters on defense. They bring back a lot of Division 1 talent in receivers Tre Mosley, Linebackers Cornell Wheeler and Lance Dixon. West Bloomfield won last year's week 9 meeting 49-26. Groves holds a 14-13 overall record against West Bloomfield.

Results:

Varsity: On Friday night, the Falcons lost to West Bloomfield 39-28.

Junior Varsity: The JV team battled to a 7-7 tie at West Bloomfield on Wednesday night.

Freshman: The Freshman team loss to 36-8 to West Bloomfield on Wednesday Afternoon.
